BBC Radio Shropshire launched on April 23rd – St George’s Day – 1985. The first breakfast show was presented by Diane Kemp, followed by Colin Young on the morning show. The opening was marked by a balloon flight from Attingham Park, and the launch of an appeal for a new lifeboat on the Welsh coast.
From day one, the station has been one of the most popular BBC Local Radio stations, reaching between a quarter and a third of the county’s entire adult population each week according the industry audience survey RAJAR. Although the station’s changed somewhat over the years, the basic mission has always been to reflect life in Shropshire.
